Just do the action listed below, submit the action on your profile, Catalyst staff will approve it and then when you’ve reached a certain number of points you can cash them in for killer gear! Spread Catalyst truth to your friends by creating a Catalyst automatic email signature or outgoing voicemail message. For example you could say something to the effect of “Hey, you’ve reached Amy, sorry I missed your call. Now that you have some free time because you wont be talking to me, make a visit to bethecatalyst.org and have a great day!” Or you could throw up a cool fact or video from our website or invite them to an event!

Be an Internet Sensation

Make a video about all things healthy. Perform a Catalyst song in front of a video camera. Sing about why you’re so excited about Catalyst. Advertise an event coming up. And when you’re done, upload your Catalyst serenade to YouTube and send the link to your friends. Ask them to share it with the people they know. (The more views the better.) If you need some inspiration you can check out our videos.

Carry the Mark

Next time you head to a community or school event, turn it into a Catalyst party by handing out Catalyst stickers. Be sure to wear a few of these stickers to show your Catalyst support. And don’t forget to talk to people about bethecatalyst.org. Just email andy@bethecatalyst.org for some stickers to hand out.

Cups in the Fence

 

Create a message about Catalyst (Youth Taking Action, Fall In Love With Fruits and Veggies - bethecatatlyst.org, Get Active! - bethecatalyst.org, etc) using cups or ribbon in one of your fences. Remember to ask for permission, and be creative! Make sure to take a picture of your message!

Get Published

Talk to the editor of your high school newspaper, yearbook, school arts journal or zine about using Catalyst logos and messages to fill empty advertising space in their publications. You could write a story about a Catalyst event you recently went to, or a cool fact you learned, or what your school is doing to get healthy food in the cafeteria.

Pirate Power

Get permission to take over your school's morning announcements with a Catalyst message. Showcase some Catalyst videos as well as giving a brief message on how to get involved. To grab even more attention, give your announcement an underground, pirated feel-create a commotion that students won't forget. School Your Peers

Talk to your health teachers and set up a time when you can present about Catalyst to your health class or another extra curricular group you are involved in. Present about what Catalyst is and your involvement with the Movement. Use the Catalyst power points that can be found at bethecatalyst.org to further your message. Postitive Reinforcement

Write a note supporting the changes your school has been making for healthier options to your school administrators. Customize your card with Catalyst stencils and have people in your community sign it. Then for extra impact, deliver it in person. (Sending it in the mail is okay, too.) Remember to ask your friends to do the same thing.

Poster Protester

Using Catalyst stencils or your own drawings and creativity, create a series of posters about the Catalyst movement. Hang them all around town, in groups down long school hallways, or one at a time in local businesses and popular hangouts. Don't forget to include "bethecatalyst.org" on each one.

Schooling the School Board

This is your chance to tell your local school board about the dangerous effects that the unhealthy food served at school is having on the students and how it directly impacts you and your friends. First, ask permission to speak in front of the school board. Then, Gather up a bunch of friends to create a presentation your school board won't forget. Tell them all about your worries of a bad diet, as well as how this is affecting the inactivity of students. Don’t forget to follow up by sending a thank you note to the board for giving you the time to present.

Create Wellness

Create a wellness committee at your school! Get some friends together and start spreading the word about why a wellness committee is essential to a healthier and more active school. Your school already has a wellness committee? Join it and bring some new Catalyst ideas to the table!

Table Talk

Set up an informational table during your school’s lunch period. Have an attractive presentation showcasing what Catalyst is and what the goal is for the students. Get people interested with some of our interactive presentations, or ask the Catalyst staff to come and make buttons or posters.

Time for an Assembly

Meet with your schools administration and set up a time when Catalyst can come present at your school! Catalyst is all about getting the word out there, and we need your help! Feel free to contact Andy Berndt at andy@bethecatalyst.com to let us know when you’d like us to come to your school.

Game Time

Organize an event at your school to help kids get active! This can be anything from capture the flag, sledding, skating, yoga, basketball, etc. You pick! Let us know how you got your school gets active!

Evaluate

The first step is finding out what needs to be fixed. Catalyst can offer you simple evaluation forms to pass around to your fellow students to get their input on food options in your cafeteria. Questions that can be asked are such as asking if there are adequate fruit and vegetable options, if the food is affordable, and most importantly asking them what can be changed.

Get Active

Start a before/after school program as a part of your wellness committee and get people active! Start a biking club, or a sports league to get your fellow students, or younger, active!

Student Gardening

Start a Student Garden at your school! Promote the aspect of “local is better”. Using local products helps cut down on costs as well as promoting a more natural, healthy supplement to your food. Coordinate with your schools administration to get your garden started today!

Help us launch the Activate U campaign in your school! Choose from any of the many options listed above to create a wellness week at your school. These activities can and will all promote awareness about healthy living and discover what changes could be made in your school to make it a healthier place to learn and grow.

Take a moment to promote Catalyst on your Facebook. Link to one of our videos, events coming up, or a blog post. Encourage them to check out Catalyst, and become a member!

Start a Blog

Get your friends together and start a blog.  Think of things you would like to see changed in your community and how policy changes in your school would make it a healthier place to learn.  Websites like Blogger and Wordpress are great places to start your own blog for free.

Talk to your principle about sending a survey to the students at your school to find out how they really feel about the options in the cafeteria, tobacco, bullying or other health related issues.  If your school administration is not supportive of your idea you can conduct interviews, focus groups and online surveys without permission from the school.  Of course you should still present the results to your principle or other school leaders.  For more ideas on how to create a survey check out students taking charge, an organization that helps youth organize and apply their ideas for making change in their schools.

Assess your School (students taking charge)

Check out the evaluation tools available on www.studentstakingcharge.org.  There are surveys for students, the school district and parents and results can be compared with other schools across the country.  You can then find ideas for projects that other students in similar situations have done to improve their schools.

Advocate for your School (students taking charge)

Learn about the wellness policies for your school.  Discuss possible improvements that could be made with a group of other students committed to improving the health of your school.  Go to a school administrator to discuss your ideas then bring them up to the school board to approve your proposed changes.

Take a Field Trip (students taking charge)

Bring influential people from your school, like the school nutrition director or school business manager, on a trip to visit another school that you think has a better school lunch, phys-ed or wellness program.  Seeing a real life example of an improved system in a school might inspire them to make those changes in their own school and provide a plan for change that works.

To increase the time available for physical education time talk to your school administration about allowing after school time for phy-ed programs that are available to all students.  Students in West Boylston, MA did this with the help of Students Taking Charge.  Read their story for ideas.

Update your Catalyst Profile

You can earn 100 points just by going on the Catalyst website, and updating your profile. Then peak around and see what other people are up to, comment, say hey. Meet somebody new!

Student Chef Project

Want better school food? Take action and solve the problem yourself. Talk to your principal, or food service staff and say you'd love to meet with them and come up with a new school food item. Catalyst can help! We can talk you through the process and help you make it awesome! Check out the project we did in Henry Sibley High School for inspiration.

Overhaul your School Store

Does your school store just carry a bunch of junk food? Wish you could get some new options in there that are awesome AND good for you? Talk to you principal and say you'd love to get some new foods in there. You can also give us a call, 651-270-6589, we'd love to help you! We can buy some samples to have your friends taste test, and figure out what would sell, and how to market it. You'll be a school hero!
