Announcing the 2011 Catalyst Summit!
Date: April 9-10, 2011
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Cost: FREE! All you have to do is get there
Catalyst is looking for new activists to get involved in a movement to change school food, and get people more physically active. At Catalyst, we look for innovative, interactive ways to get out the message about healthy eating--from guerrilla art, to music, to online media.
The annual Catalyst Summit is an opportunity to get trained on the facts, network with other passionate teens, and gain the skills that it takes to be an effective activist. Our Summit is for anyone who wants to help get the message out and be part of a movement of passionate leaders looking to make a change.

Breakout Sessions:
Learn the Facts: The first day of the Summit we will cover the basic facts of what we’re fighting for. Here are the basics of some of the sessions:
School Food Policy?
Want to change what’s for lunch in your school? We’re getting deep in this session to find out how.
Guerrilla Art
Screenprinting, button making; this hands on session will teach you to be a guerrilla activist!
Food Marketing
Do you know Tony the Tiger? Lucky the Leprechaun? How about the Trix Rabbit? In Food Marketing we’ll explore how the food industry markets unhealthy products to youth, and how U.S. advertising compares to countries around the world.
Catalyst Cooks
Get hands on in the kitchen and learn how to make a variety of after school snacks, and easy meals.
Spread the word
The second day of the Summit we will be going to downtown St. Paul to get our message out. We will be doing a huge activism event, and having a press conference. It’s going to be mind blowing!

CHAPERONE/PARENT INFORMATION
Catalyst Summit participants will be closely chaperoned throughout the event by Catalyst staff, and local program coordinators. The Summit will be hosted at the Intermedia Arts at 2822 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN 55408. The hotel we are staying at is the Ramada Plaza Minneapolis 1330 Industrial Boulevard NE Minneapolis, MN 55413. The students will be under round the clock supervision.
The Catalyst Summit is completely free, including food and lodging. The students just need to get their own transporation to and from the event. We will provide a five to one youth to adult chaperone ratio. Catalyst staff will serve as chaperones, and we will be contacting each student to identify the chaperone that will be in charge of them as students apply.
We plan to do our best to match youth with adult coordinators that they are already working with in their communities, or will have the opportunity to work with in their communities in the future. The Catalyst staff will work closely with youth participants, parents, and adult chaperones to determine these arrangements. Chaperones and staff will be with students during training and all scheduled programming. Students will be seperated by sex in hotel rooms, and only students assigned to that room will be allowed in that room. No students will be allowed in anyone else's room. Students from the same area will stay 1-2 to a bed so 2-4 per room, depending on our rooming list. Chaperones will either room alone, or may be paired with one other chaperone and stay two to a room.

Chaperones will be in charge of five summit participants. All meals and lodging will be paid for. Chaperones will also get a $100 gift card as a thank you for attending. Email andy@bethecatalyst.org for additional questions.
A registered nurse will also be on site throughout the Summit, and Catalyst will be contacting each student and parent(s), once the student is confirmed to attend, to discuss any allergies, prescriptions or other medical needs.
Catalyst will be providing additional information regarding these and other logistics once applicants are confirmed to attend the Summit. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact our staff with any specific questions, 651-270-6589, or email andy@bethecatalyst.org.
The Catalyst Summit is officially full and not accepting new applications. Please sign up for our newsletter on our front page to be notified of upcoming events. Thanks! Email andy@bethecatalyst.org with further questions!

phew, no, thank YOU for the reply! had me slightly worried there, lol...
Hey Sarah, Catalyst is funded from Blue Cross Blue Sheild when they partnered with the state of Minnesota and sued the tobacco industry to pay them back for the health care costs brought on by smoking. Tobacco prevention is also one of the policy agendas we work on. There is no need to worry my friend. Thanks for the question though!
Hi, so I was wondering, who's funding all this for us? Isn't there going to be a LOT of ppl coming to the summit, and it's all free? I'm getting a little worried..., is the state or the gov., or are you paying for us?
