Hello from smoke-free Mumbai, India! It has
been an exciting trip so far. I am here with youth advocates from
around the world, attending a youth pre-conference to the World
Conference on Tobacco or Health.
I am working with three youth from Tunisia and threee from Algeria
from the American Cancer Society's Travaillons Sans Fumée (Working
Without Smoke) campaign. And there are also youth advocates and other
partners from across the U.S. - New York's Reality Check, Oklahoma's
SWAT, Hawaii's REAL.
This morning Catalyst got a fabulous shout out at the conference!
Dr. Neena Prasad, form the Bloomberg Foundation, featured a photo of
Catalyst's march for the Freedom to Breathe in her presentation. Good
work Catalyst!!
I have not seen much of Mumbai yet, but I have been learning a lot
about what youth are doing to fight back against the tobacco industry
around the world. I've been working with the Eastern Mediterranean and
Eurpoean regions for the past couple of days, and we've been focusing
on smoke-free workplaces and bans on tobacco advertising. These are
both provisions of the World Health Organization's global tobacco
treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
Some of the photos are from he cultural presentations at the conference - there have been some amazing dance performances, singing, and learning about different cultural traditions from around the world.
We head to the World Conference on Tobacco or Health tomorrow, and we'll have a little time to explore Mumbai, so more photos and updates to come!
